A heartbreaking loss for the Ottawa Senators as they fell to the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 in a shootout, on an evening that celebrated a milestone for former Senator Marian Hossa.

The night began with a touching ceremony, raising money and awareness in the fight against cancer. Max Keeping, Mark Reeds and Bryan Murray, all battling cancer, dropped the ceremonial puck.

The Senators got off to a great start. Two minutes into the game, the young line of Cody Ceci, Curtis Lazar and Mark Stone went to work, as Stone gets the rediretion to open the scoring.

The Blackhawks would rally back taking control. They outshot the Senators 15-6 after one period. Kris Versteeg would undress Erik Karlsson surprising Craig Anderson, giving the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead after one period.

Clarke MacArthur scored the only goal of the 2nd period on the powerplay, his 5th of the season to tie it at 2 after 2.

Bobby Ryan and Jonathan Toews exchanged goals in the 3rd period to tie it at 3.

With about 6 minutes left in the game, former Senator Marian Hossa gave Chicago a 4-3 lead, earning his 1,000th career point. Senators fans gave Hossa a standing ovation for his milestone.

The Senators didin't give up. Mika Zibanejad, who was still in search of his first goal of the season, tied it up to force overtime.

It would be Patrick Sharp, the only goal scorer in the shootout as Chicago beat Ottawa 5-4. Ottawa visits Boston Saturday
