Ottawa Police have identified a male suspect after a passenger was maced on an OC Transpo bus Wednesday afternoon.

It happened around 12:39 p.m. on Slater Street near Bank Street.

Police say a verbal altercation took place between a male passenger and the suspect who then sprayed mace in the passenger’s face on the route 96 bus. Police say the suspect then fled the bus with a woman.

“Mace, bear spray, any animal repellant is legal to own. It becomes illegal if you use it against someone,” said Ottawa Police Const. Marc Soucy.

Police don't believe the suspect and victim knew each other.

A number of bus passengers were also affected by the spray and were treated by Ottawa Paramedics at the scene.

No charges have been laid.
