The former Pembroke teacher who was shot in Honduras last month is expected to return to Canada as early as next week.

Dennis Spencer, 59, is now awake and informed of the shooting after being in a medically-induced coma for 10 days.

Spencer's family is now looking at medical facilities in Ontario that treat patients with brain injuries.

The longtime educator was shot in the upper body during a wild carjacking and shootout in San Pedro Sula on March 27. Bone fragments entered his brain as a result.
