Cars, cyclists and pedestrians will be able to use the new Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge in Ottawa's south end starting this July.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson has confirmed the $48 million bridge is ahead of schedule with a grand opening date still to be set.

"This bridge is important because it will take some pressure off congested roads in the south end, particulary Manotick.

This is a major transportation link across the river,"  Watson told CTV Ottawa.

Councillor Steve Desroches has been keeping his constituents updated on the bridge work.

'At this point, it is expected that the bridge will open ahead of schedule', Desroches wrote on his website.

The bridge will connect Strandherd Drive in Nepean to Earl Armstrong Road in Gloucester as it spans the Rideau River.

The bridge has been plagued by contractor and construction delays.

It was first set to open to traffic in 2012.

That date was pushed back to September 2014.

The first contractor declared bankruptcy and there were delays in getting equipment and bridge arches to the site.
