The Ottawa Senators fell short in a comeback attempt  tonight as they lost to the New York Islanders 3-2 in overtime.

Midway in the first period, Mike Hoffman scores his 8th goal of the season, just the 2nd shot on net, gives Ottawa a 1-0 lead. Craig Anderson, once again made some exceptional saves keeping the Islanders off the scoreboard after one period.

The Islanders tie it up late in the 2nd period as Brock Nelson scores on the breakaway. The Senators do get a break as Casey Cizikas appears to score in the dying seconds. The goal is waved off as time had expired before the puck crossed the goal line.

The Islanders take the lead one minute into the 3rd period as Anderson gets beat down low by Ryan Strome. After few scoring chances, Mark Stone feeds it to Clarke MacArthur, his 9th goal of the season, to tie it at 2.

It would head into overtime and Thomas Hickey’s wraparound goes off Cody Ceci’s skate and in for the game winner as the Islanders win 3-2.

Senators have lost 3 straight and 5 of their last 6 games. Anderson made 25 saves for the victory.

The Senators return home from a 5 game road trip to host the NY Islanders on Thursday when they pay tribute to former Senators Captain Daniel Alfredsson.
