Ottawa firefighters were called to a 3 storey, 40 unit apartment block at 218 Somerset Street East just before 2am Thursday morning.  Crews had the fire under control in about 10 minutes.  An unattended candle is being blamed as the cause of the fire.  There were no injuries and 1 person has been displaced.  Damage is estimated at $2 thousand.

Ottawa firefighters were also kept busy Wednesday by two kitchen fires - one in Orleans, the other in Bells Corners.

The first fire broke out in a home on Hadley Court in Bells Corners around 4:15pm.  A woman, her 3 children and 5 other kids she was babysitting were in the home at the time the fire began.  Firefighters say one of the children left a pot on the stove.  When she returned, the pot had caught fire.  Firefighters had the blaze under control in 15 minutes.  There were no injuries.  The blaze caused $49 thousand in damage.

The second blaze began less than two hours later in a row home on Torino Terrace in Orleans.  It took firefighters about half an hour to put out the kitchen fire.  Investigators say an unattended pot was the cause of the blaze.  There were no injuries although 3 people have been displaced.  The fire caused $48 thousand in damage.
