About sixty employees from the Salvation Army's Booth Centre in downtown Ottawa are set to hit the picket lines Friday afternoon.

Their union has been in a strike position since mid-December after their contract expired.

Union vice-president Larry Rousseau says the employees haven't heard from management since the end of November.

"The ball is squarely in their court so we're increasing that pressure," he said. "We've been in a legal strike position now for two weeks and we're ratcheting it up."

"The can still come to the table, they can still make an offer and we're hoping that they will do so."

The main issue is salary rates. The union says that, even with the latest contract proposal from the Salvation Army, its members would still be paid less than those at other homeless shelters in the city.
