Ottawa police are investigating after a woman was killed when her car collided with a cement truck in downtown Ottawa Thursday morning.
Paramedics say the 49-year-old woman was found without vital signs when emergency crews arrived at the intersection of King Edward Avenue and St. Patrick Street just before 10 a.m.
Although paramedics tried to resuscitate the female driver, she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital. Her name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
The 56-year-old driver of the cement truck was not injured in the crash.
People who live in the area say seven people have been killed and many more have been injured since 1997.
They say something needs to be done before another person gets killed. Many say the best solution is moving truck traffic out of the downtown core.
"I'm absolutely convinced it will continue to happen until we take trucks off that road, 'til we do something to reduce the speed limit or reduce the actual speed of traffic . . . the speed limit doesn't matter," said Angela Rickman of the Lowertown Community Association.
Police have acknowledged the concern, but say Lowertown streets carry heavy traffic and officers are patrolling them as best they can.
The collision closed parts of St. Patrick Street and King Edward Avenue for about five hours while police investigated.
