An Ottawa police officer has received a suspended sentence and two years probation after he assaulted and threatened to kill fellow officers last year.
Const. Jeffrey Gulick, 49, pleaded guilty in February to assaulting police, uttering threats, mischief and escaping lawful custody. The sentence, which was handed down on Friday, gives Gulick a criminal record.
As part of his conditions, the judge ordered a firearms ban, with the exception of guns authorized by his employer. Gulick must also either perform 60 hours of community service or make a $1,200 charitable donation.
Police said they were forced to use a Taser to calm Gulick after he uttered death threats to two other officers when they responded to a domestic situation in May 2008.
He was suspended from active duty with pay after being charged last year.
Chief Vern White said in light of Friday's sentencing, Gulick will remain suspended.
Now that the case is no longer before the courts, an internal investigation into the officer's conduct will resume.
