More than a hundred student protesters were arrested after storming two university campuses in Gatineau Thursday—the fourth straight day of clashes between police and protesters in the city.
As many as 600 students took part in the demonstration, including three busloads of demonstrators from Montreal.
The students and police, dressed in riot gear, clashed as the mob tried to enter buildings at the University of Quebec's Outaouais campus on Alexandre-Tâché Boulevard.
Police fired pepper spray to keep the crowd back and arrested several protesters, many of whom had also been arrested Wednesday.
Students also protested at the nearby Collège Nouvelles Frontières
Some demonstrators complained of being injured by police during the clash. One protester sustained a gash on his forehead, while another had a cut ear.
The students are protesting a tuition fee hike being proposed by the Quebec government. The plan would increase students' fees by $1,625 over five years.
A similar confrontation happened on Wednesday when another group of 150 students were arrested at the school for obstructing police.
The school had previously sought a court injunction to remove the student protesters but they continue to defy the order.
"You have the right to protest," said one student covering their face on Wednesday. "You have the right to speak your own mind and say what's important for you."
The demonstrations have forced the administration to close the UQO campus on Friday due to safety concerns.
