One person is dead after a vehicle slammed into a bus shelter in a plaza parking lot at Carling Avenue and Richmond Road just before the noon hour.

Const. Alain Boucher told CTV News the bus shelter toppled when an 84-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle and reversed into the shelter at 2525 Carling Avenue.

"She was reversing out of a parking spot and struck a bus shelter in doing so," Boucher told CTV News.

Police say four victims were either in the shelter or standing nearby at the time of the crash.

All four people were treated by paramedics and transported to hospital where a 66-year-old female was later pronounced dead.

The three other victims - a 77-year-old man, an 89-year-old woman and a five-year-old boy - all sustained minor injuries. The female driver was not injured in the fatal collision.

One shopper who shops at the plaza on a weekly basis told CTV News the parking lot is a dangerous place for pedestrians and she's had to run from approaching vehicles in the past.

"I'm not at all surprised because as I say people don't seem to realize that there are pedestrians here going through all the time," said Marie Bourne.

The scene of the incident was cordoned off by police this afternoon, blocking an area of the plaza's parking lot.

Police have not released the names of the victims and say no charges have been laid at this time.

Police are continuing to investigate.
