Nortel has confirmed nearly 400 people have left the company's Ottawa offices through layoffs, retirement and people leaving the firm as it moves forward with a restructuring plan to save the debt-ridden company.
There are now roughly 3,800 employees working at Nortel's Ottawa campus. About 5,600 people are employed at Nortel offices across Canada and nearly 9,000 people work for the company in the United States.
A spokesperson for Nortel would not say how many people left the company as a result of layoffs.
Nortel filed for bankruptcy protection in January and has been making significant changes to help the company restructure in the midst of a tattered economy.
Meanwhile, those who work at Nortel say there is a growing concern about the company's future and the legal rights of employees as the company pushes forward with its restructuring plan.
Ottawa law firm Nelligan O'Brien Payne is addressing those concerns by offering a free information session for laid off or current Nortel workers.
The session is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Travelodge Hotel on Carling Avenue on Wednesday.
Next month, lawyers will be in a Toronto courtroom to try to establish how employees will be represented in the bankruptcy protection process.
So far, there are several law firms working with pensioners, unionized workers and laid off employees.
