High school music class is usually pretty memorable, regardless of the reason people remember it for. But for students at one high school in Ottawa, it's definitely one they won't forget.
Last week, the music class at Hillcrest High School was named the best in Canada. They made a music video to their cover of Serena Ryder's Stompa. On Friday, the group found out that out of over 250 schools, they had won.
"We found out that we won and we all lost it," says grade 11 student Keesha Steppan. "We were freaking out, I was crying I was so excited."
"For us to know that the family and community that we built in this school through our music program...is amazing," adds grade 12 student Lelna Gwet.
The group is getting set for the school's music night on Thursday, when all the different ensembles will play a concert in the school's auditorium.
Jeannie Hunter, one of the music teachers at Hillcrest, couldn't be more proud of her students.
"These kids, they're my family," she says. "We love each other, we laugh together, we cry together, sometimes we jump up and down when we find out we've won contests!"
Hunter says the students are heavily involved in every aspect of the program and provide a lot of feedback. It's a crucial part of her philosophy.
"It's so important for kids to be able to express themselves artistically and...grow as whole people. I believe music activates your brain in a different way than any other thing that you can do."
The band is also planning a trip to New York City in April. For more information, including a link to the silent auction for musical instrument furniture, visit the school's website.
