It's the warmest Nov. 5 in Ottawa history
Ottawa broke an 84-year temperature record on Saturday.
The temperature hit 23.2 C at 3 p.m., setting the record for the warmest Nov. 5 in Ottawa history. The previous record was 22.8 C, set back in 1938.
"This is a high-pressure area called the Bermuda High," Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips said. "It's positioned and just pumping all of this like a heat pump."
It's the second straight day with record-breaking warm temperatures in Ottawa. The temperature hit 20.7 C on Friday, the warmest temperature ever recorded in Ottawa on Nov. 4.
Residents took advantage of the summer-like weather to visit the ByWard Market or hit the beach.
"It's rare that we get to have beach volleyball this late in the season so we figured, 'Hey, let's try to find some people', get some sun, get some exercise," said Ali Sallouha at Mooney's Bay.
"I wish there were more days like this in November," said another person at the beach.
One year ago, the temperature hit 8 C in Ottawa. This year, people were leaving the coats at home for shorts, t-shirts and outdoor activities.
"Beautiful day in November. We are taking advantage of being outdoors and meeting up with friends and getting some tennis time with my little son," said Marc Abdelnour.
"I remember in past years there was snow at this time but we are out here playing tennis," said Ben Van Ryn.
Above seasonal temperatures are expected to continue until Tuesday in Ottawa.
"We are seeing temperatures that are 16 degrees warmer than it should be this time of year," Phillips said, noting the above-seasonal temperatures have blanketed Ottawa for over a week. "The high in Ottawa should be 7 degrees."
