The supervising provincial coroner for eastern Ontario announced an inquest will be held into the death of Eric Leighton, 18.
He died on May 26, 2011, when he was building a barbeque in shop class that exploded.
The inquest will look at the circumstances surrounding Eric Leighton's death. In addition, the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.
The date, location and and coroner has not been announced.
"He's not there and I guess I'm hoping one of the days I wake up that he would be, and this would be just an awful nightmare that we've all been going through," said Sheri Leighton, Eric’s mother, at the one year anniversary of his death at Mother Teresa High School.
"I don't like to say move on, because nobody's ever going to move on from his passing," said his sister Kaitlyn. "But we can move forward from it."
Leighton's school has since banned all welding.
