The Bell Capital Cup gets underway Thursday with minor hockey teams from seven countries battling it out at rinks across the city.

Nearly 500 teams are vying for the championship win. All but one of the teams will play their first game on Thursday.

A record-number of countries are competing in this year's tournament with teams from Canada, the United States, China, Finland, Germany, Hungary and South Korea.

The Bell Capital Cup is the biggest international minor hockey tournament in the world, generating millions of dollars in economic impact for the region.

Close to 12,000 hotel rooms have been booked for this year's tournament, which wraps up on Monday.

More than 990 games will be played on 34 ice surfaces across the city. The championship game for each of the 19 divisions will be played at Scotiabank Place.

Money raised during the tournament is earmarked for minor hockey and local charities. Last year, the tournament raised $252,000. The Bell Capital Cup has raised more than $2 million over its 12-year history.
