An abandoned correctional facility near Merrickville went up in flames on Sunday morning, causing $300,000 in damage and destroying two buildings on the property. The cause is under investigation.

When fire crews arrived at 4707 Donnelly Rd., one two-storey building was "fully involved" with flames already extending to another building nearby.

With a third building threatened by the flame, Ottawa fire crews worked on protecting the building and were successful. Merrickville's fire department also sent two extra trucks to assist, putting 17 vehicles and 40 firefighters total at the scene.

The fire was under control by 5:15 a.m., with no injuries reported.

Merrickville is about an hour southwest of downtown Ottawa.
