A major deal that removes a stumbling block in the redevelopment of Lansdowne Park has been reached between the city, the developer and community groups.
The agreement puts the city one step closer to avoiding a lengthy and costly Ontario municipal board hearing. However, there are still three appeals filed by individuals that are yet to be resolved.
City council approved a mediated settlement Wednesday that will change the size of the redevelopment and give cash to community groups and businesses.
The agreement will give $300,000 in financial assistance to the Glebe BIA and $30,000 to community groups to help them cope with construction. That cost will be shared by the city and the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group.
The agreement also includes the following changes:
- Eliminating mid-rise residential buildings facing Holmwood Avenue
- Reducing the height of the residential tower at Bank Street and Holmwood Avenue to 12 storeys
- Adding public space to the corner of Bank Street and Holmwood Avenue
- Capping the residential development at 280 units
- Reducing the height of two commercial buildings
- Fast-tracking the reconstruction of Bank Street in the Glebe
- Restricting vehicle access to Lansdowne from Holmwood Avenue
- Agreeing to work with community groups in the area about traffic and parking issues
The city hopes to settle the other three appeals before an Ontario Municipal Board hearing scheduled for May 9.
