A 71-year-old male cyclist is in life-threatening condition after he was hit by a car on Hawthorne Road, just north of Hunt Club Road, in south Ottawa a short time after noon Saturday.

The male had no vital signs when paramedics arrived at the scene, but his pulse was brought back with aggressive techniques on route to hospital. He suffered critical injuries to his head and chest.

The cyclist was wearing a helmet, but the helmet shattered after the man struck the windshield of the car and was thrown "a significant distance", said Paul Morneau of the Ottawa Paramedic Service.

Two off-duty physicians also stopped at the scene to help the cyclist.

Hawthorne Road has been closed between Stevenage Road and Hunt Club Road for the Ottawa Police investigation.
