Closures and cancellations in the Ottawa area due to the extreme cold

Extreme cold temperatures are set to grip the national capital region over the next two days.

Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for Ottawa, eastern Ontario and western Quebec, calling for lows of -30 C Friday night, and a daytime high of  -14 C on Saturday.

Snowflake Kingdom

The Snowflake Kingdom in Gatineau's Jacques-Cartier Park will open at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

The popular Winterlude attraction was closed on Friday due to the weather conditions.

Winterlude

All outdoor activities on the opening day of Winterlude have been cancelled due to the cold, including the Ice-Carving Championship on Sparks Street.

"Given the extreme weather conditions and to ensure the security of staff, volunteers, and visitors, all outdoor Winterlude activities held today have been cancelled. Stay tuned for updates," Canadian Heritage said on its website.

"The launch of Winterlude National Ice-Carving Championship, presented by Tim Hortons has been postponed to Saturday, February 4 at 10 a.m."

The NCC says the OLG Sno-Bus service will begin at 12 p.m. Saturday.

Eastern Canadian Ski Championships

The Eastern Canadian Cross-Country Ski Championships at Nakkertok Ski Centre in Gatineau, Que. has cancelled Friday's racing events due to the cold temperatures.

The rules for Olympic style competition permit racing only at temperatures above -20 C.

A decision will be made on Friday for events scheduled for Saturday.

Camp Fortune

Camp Fortune in Chelsea, Que. is modifying its operations on Friday.

The Pineault Quad and Valley Quad will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, while Skyline Quad and Meech Quad will be closed.

Night skiing has been cancelled for Friday night.

Camp Fortune says the hills will be open for skiing on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. However, all Saturday lesson programs are cancelled. Regular operations resume on Sunday.

Sommet Edelweiss

Sommet Edelweiss in Wakefield, Que. will be closed on Friday and Saturday due to the cold temperatures.

"Due to the unusual temperatures, Sommet Edelweiss will be closed on Saturday," the resort said on Friday. Snow School programs will not be held on Saturday.

Ski Vorlage

Ski Vorlage in Wakefield, Que. is closed on Friday due to the extreme weather forecast.

The resort will open on Saturday for regular hours.

Mont Cascades

Mont Cascades in Cantley, Que. says it is closed on Friday due to the cold temperatures.

Officials say due to the extreme temperatures, it will delay the opening of the mountain on Saturday, with ski lifts opening at 12 p.m.

Mont Ste. Marie

Mont Ste. Marie in Lac Sainte-Marie says due to the cold forecast, the Vanier Chair Lift will be open from 9 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday only. Normal operations will resume for the weekend.

Icelynd

The Icelynd outdoor skating trail in Ottawa will be closed on Friday due to the cold weather.

The skating trail will open on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

The Little Penguin Trail

The Little Penguin Trail for skating in Gatineau will be closed on Friday due to the cold temperatures.

The trail is expected to be open on Saturday.

Countryside Adventures

The Countryside Adventures outdoor adventures in Moose Creek, Ont. will be closed on Friday.

The skating, snowshoeing and tubing trails will be open on Saturday.
