Officials say Broadview Public School in west Ottawa will be closed Monday after a suspicious fire scorched its exterior on Sunday.

Ottawa fire crews said they got a call to the school around 12:05 p.m. Sunday, when witnesses were reporting thick black smoke in the air.

They said the fire started in a couch on the roof of a mechanical room that was attached to the back of the school.

Ottawa Fire Services spokesman Marc Messier tweeted the fire was knocked down around 12:20 p.m. and there was no indication it spread to the inside of the school.

However, he said two or three classrooms were damaged by smoke, along with light smoke damage through the school.

Crews also had to knock down parts of the walls and ceilings around the windows to make sure the fire didn't spread inside.

Fire officials say the fire caused $65,000 damage, and it is considered suspicious. They said police are canvassing the community for information.

A post on the school's website said the school will be closed Monday because of the fire, but will be re-opening Tuesday.

This fire comes just days after another suspicious fire closed a portable classroom in Stittsville.
