BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Police in Belleville are warning people to stay off the ice on a local river after a boy narrowly escaped a dip in the chilly water.

The 12-year-old boy was walking on the Moira River in the city's north end when he broke through the thin ice at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014.

Police say the boy was able to scramble to shore and was OK after the incident.

But they add it could easily have been a tragic ending.

They say the ice isn't thick enough to support a person's weight, despite the recent colder-than-usual weather.
