While people converge on the Capital for the Canada Day long weekend, the rising cost of fuel may have stopped some from making their way to Ottawa on area waterways.

Montreal resident Lynn Godwin says it now costs her about $1,500 to fill her family's boat with a tank of gas. She says the rising costs make it about $100 per hour to motor her boat down area rivers.

She says she's now turned to strategizing in order to save money on fuel while boating.

"What we do is we try to go slower because the faster you go the more you burn up fuel," Godwin told CTV Ottawa.

Godwin used that strategy to boat to Ottawa for this weekend's Canada Day festivities.

"We just enjoy it so much - bringing the boat up, the crowds, the way people dress, all the activities going on," said Godwin.

Bill Cronin, a resident of St. Jacobs, Ont., says he also enjoys visiting the Capital for Canada Day by boat.

"This year is going to cost more than ever but we don't mind it -- just paying what we need to pay to be here for Canada Day," said Cronin.
