A van crashed into a west Ottawa home last night as surveillance footage catches the driver and passenger taking off on foot.

A home security video was posted to twitter showing the incident.

The white SUV drives thru a tempoarary roundabout at the corner of Foxhall Way and Bridgestone Drive and ploughs into the house in the Bridlewood area.

Fortunately no one was home at the time.

Ottawa police say that the vehicle was stolen and the suspects were apprehended. The 16-year-old driver is facing multiple charges including mischief, possession of stolen property, and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

Homeowner Gabe Gutierrez says he's made complaints about the roundabout in the past.

“It’s a mini roundabout” says Gutierrez “and it’s supposed to help slow down traffic because there is an issue with speeding here. The roundabout in one direction is pretty much straight through and this scenario here where the occupants of the vehicle seem to have gotten confused and they tried to turn at the last minute, from what the video shows.”

The area's city councillor disagrees. Allan Hubley says that, while it's unfortunate the crash happened, the roundabout did it's job by slowing the stolen vehicle down, possibly preventing a far worse collision down the road.

Hubley says the pilot project was started last summer because of excessive speeding on Bridgestone. He says the average speed has dropped by 15 kilometres per hour. He says the City has made some adjustments with the placement of the temporary roundabout and now intends to build a permanent concrete version.
