The jersey number of the most important player in Ottawa Senators history will soon hang from the rafters of the Canadian Tire Centre.

The team will retire Daniel Alfredsson’s number 11 on Dec. 29 before a game against the Detroit Red Wings, the team he played with for one season before returning to the Senators to officially retire in 2014.

Alfredsson is the franchise’s all-time leader in goals, assists and points, and served as captain for 13 seasons. Along with his on-ice prowess, he’s known for his leadership and off-ice contributions to the city, particularly mental health advocacy.

Senators senior advisor Bryan Murray said of all the players he’s coached—including several Hall-of-Famers—but “there’s none better than Daniel Alfredsson.”

Alfredsson is the first modern Senators player to have his jersey number retired. The Senators retired Frank Finnigan’s number 8 when they re-entered the league in 1992. Finnigan played for the Senators in the 1920s and 1930s.

The day before his number is retired, Alfredsson will also be honoured at a Dec. 28 gala at the Canadian Museum of History.
