A day that began with so much excitement for the Ottawa Senators ended in a costly 6-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

A big day for 2 members of the Senators as defenseman  Marc Methot signed a 4 year contract extension early this morning to start the day. Then former 67 Shane Prince was given the green light to make his NHL debut against the Hurricanes.

6 minutes into the game the Hurricanes score a weak goal, as Andrej Nestrasil banks the backhander off Robin Lehner and the puck goes in giving Carolina a 1-0 lead. The Senators tie it up late in the period as Shane Prince sets up Eric Condra, earning his first career NHL assist .

It was a crazy 2nd period with 5 goals. The Hurricanes start it off on the power play as Jeff Skinner bangs in the rebound. The Senators came right back as Mike Hoffman redirects Mika Zibanejad’s shot in to tie it at 2.

Less than 3 minutes later the Hurricanes make it 3-2 as the puck goes off Karlsson’s stick and in. Nathan Gerbe gets credit for the goal. Just 32 seconds later the Senators tie it back up as Zibanejad feeds it to Cody Ceci who redirects it in making it 3-3.

With under 50 seconds left in the period, Jay McClement scores to make it 4-3 but in doing so Lehner and Clarke MacArthur collide in net.  MacArthur would be helped off the ice. Neither one would return for the 3rd period.

Andrew Hammond would take over in nets for Lehner, making his 2nd career NHL appearance, his first of the season. Two and a half minutes into the period  Michal Jordan scores on the power play for a 5-3 lead. Chris Terry rounded out the scoring for a 6-3 victory.

The Senators next host the Montreal Canadiens Wednesday night.
