A Carleton University student is speaking out after she says she received a handwritten note in her home mailbox that left her feeling uneasy and observed.

Eren Cervantes-Altamirano said she contacted police after finding a note in her mailbox reading “Canada is no place immigrants or terrorists. Go back home.”

Cervantes-Altamirano says the note left her in shock.

“I felt confused and unsafe as well as observed,” she said.

Encouraged by family and friends, Cervantes-Altamirano reported the note to the police and to the National Coucil of Canadian Muslims.

She also posted the note on Facebook and Twitter, and says the response there has been “overwhelmingly positive.”

Cervantes-Altamirano says more work needs to be done to address the issues of racism and islamophobia.

Ottawa police say no hate crimes have been reported in the Capital since the terrorist attacks in Paris last week.
