An Ottawa man has been charged with first degree murder following a homicide in the Carlington area.
Daniel Adjetey-Nelson appeared in court Sunday by video from the Ottawa Police Station. He is charged with first degree murder and theft under $5,000. Police allege Adjetey-Nelson fled the crime scene in a stolen car.
The 34-year-old turned himself in to police Saturday following a manhunt that lasted more than 24 hours. He is set to make his second court appearance relating to the city's 14th homicide of the year on October 18th, 2016.
55-year-old Mitch Paquette was stabbed to death Thursday evening outside a series of row houses on Rosenthal Avenue in the Carlington area. Nearby residents say Paquette was a loving grandfather, a kind neighbour and a loyal step-father. Flowers now lay outside the scene as a tribute to Paquette’s life. Residents say he was at the home babysitting his grandchild.
Ottawa Community Housing has stepped up patrols in the area and has started going door-to-door in an effort to comfort residents who feel the neighbourhood is unsafe.
Adjetey-Nelson was on bail and awaiting trial in another matter before the provincial courts. He is charged with assault with a weapon causing bodily harm stemming from an unrelated incident.
His defense attorney, Doug Baum, waived arraignment today, but said his client's plea has been deemed not guilty. Adjetey-Nelson has a list of 11 people with whom he cannot communicate.
A bail date for the first degree murder charges has not been set.
