Conservation authorities say a dry winter, early thaw, and hot, dry spring has left water levels in the Mississippi and Rideau Valley watersheds unseasonably low.

Water resources technician Patrick Larson says if there isn't rain in eastern Ontario soon, the levels could become dangerously low.

The low levels could mean enforced watering days or outright bans and make boating and swimming more dangerous.

For now, officials are asking residents in Smiths Falls, Perth, Carleton Place, Mississippi Mills and other communities to cut back on water use by about ten per cent.
