The family of a young autistic boy who was handcuffed at school last month will make a statement on Parliament Hill today.

Stephanie Huck, the mother of nine-year-old Daniel, says her autistic son was handcuffed by police because he was acting out at school.

In an interview with CTV Ottawa last month, Huck said her son occasionally acts out in what she calls “outbursts.”   That day, she was told her son was behaving violently and “throwing down chairs” in the classroom.

“My nine year old autistic son is being handcuffed at school. We bring him there and we hope that he's safe and we pick him up on these sorts of circumstances. It's horrendous,” Huck told CTV shortly after the incident.

At the time, Ottawa Catholic School Board issued a short statement saying staff “acted appropriately to ensure the safety of everyone involved.”

Huck and her husband Dan Ten Oever are holding a joint press conference later today with the organization Restoring Dignity.

Daniel’s parents are expected to give a statement, followed by an update on talks between Daniel Ten Oever’s family and the Ottawa Catholic School Board.

More to come.
