Ottawa-Vanier voters will head to the polls on Thursday in a tight race that could threaten nearly half a century of loyalty to the Liberal party.

Chris Penton says he normally votes for the provincial liberals, but is considering swinging to Ontario’s conservatives this time by voting for candidate, André Marin, the province's former ombudsman.

“It’s been the same faces and the same, neglect is a strong word, but the same taking for granted - complacency, and it feels stale,” Penton said, citing things like hydro and negligence as concerns.

Ottawa-Vanier has been a liberal stronghold since 1971 - held by liberal Madeleine Meilleur until this summer.

Long-time resident Byron Statham says that is for good reason, voting for liberal candidate, Nathalie Des Rosiers, in advanced polls.

“Her head is in the right space, she understands what’s going on. This whole area, you’re going to see a lot of new development in Vanier,” Statham said.

More than 4800 people have already voted in advanced polls. For undecided voters the final debate is taking place tonight at Rockliffe Park Public School at 7:30.

There are a total of 11 candidates registered in the Ottawa-Vanier byelection.
