Starting today, The Royal Canadian Mint is phasing out the penny.
So what can you do with your coins?
Ottawa mayor Jim Watson has launched a penny drive for the Ottawa Food Bank.
“There are lots of charities doing penny drives, so I thought we should do one here at Ottawa City Hall,” said Watson. “The Food Bank tells us for every dollar they raise, they can turn that into $5, so a penny can go five times longer.”
CTV Ottawa asked what you’re going to do with your pennies.
- Henok Fantaye tweets: “Donate them to @freethechildren for their penny drive"
- Daniel Nikoletop tweets, "I’m donating my pennies to @SOOntario: a non-profit supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities."
- Jeff Jacques says,"I’m keeping a handful of shiny 2012 pennies as keepsakes and rolling the rest.”
