An Ottawa senior suffered minor injuries in an early morning house fire that killed her family's pet cat.

Ottawa firefighters say flames broke out in a bedroom at a home on Fisher Avenue just before 6 a.m. Thursday.

The woman's grandson, believed to be in his 20s, saw the smoke and ran into his grandmother's bedroom to wake her up.

Both managed to escape. However, the grandmother was taken to hospital to be treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Investigators say the home is destroyed, with damage believed to be in the range of $275,000. The fire is believed to be accidental.
