It's the debate that's causing all kinds of controversy: taxi or Uber? So we put it to the ultimate test.
Two trips to the airport - one in a cab, the other in Uber - at the same time of day and from the same starting point, to compare the differences.
The driver of the taxi arrived about five minutes after we called him from the Hintonburg area. He made his way down to Carling Ave. and then to Bronson Ave. to get to the airport. With minimal traffic, it took 15 minutes on the nose to get there. With a 15% tip and surcharge, the total was just over $37. It took a total of just over 20 minutes.
We went back to the same area and ordered a car from Uber. The first time, the driver charged for the ride without picking us up. After sending feedback to say what happened, we got an immediate refund. But that took about 15 minutes to deal with.
A second car was ordered and it showed up almost nine minutes later, more than the taxi. The driver has only been working for the company for two weeks. He took the Queensway to get to Bronson. The route took almost five minutes longer.
But when we got to the airport, his phone had died, meaning he couldn't end the ride. He could only do that manually on his phone when he got home. So it was an extra 20 minutes until we found out how much the ride cost, which was just under $23.
So the taxi took half the time to get to the airport, but we saved $14 with Uber.
