The Ottawa Senators started off a 5 game homestand tonight with quite a comeback, responding with 4 goals in the 3rd period falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 in a shootout.
The Penguins open the scoring just one minute into the game as Kris Letang buries the wraparound by Robin Lehner. Midway in the period, Sidney Crosby goes in on the breakaway for his 18th goal of the season. Penguins lead 2-0 after one period.
The Senators get a chance to pull to within one on a penalty shot, after Bobby Ryan was pulled down by Kris Letang. Ryan is denied by back-up goalie Thomas Greiss. The Penguins make it look like they had this one in control, as Evgeni Malkin goes top corner on Lehner giving Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead after 2 periods.
The Senators get to work in the 3rd period outshooting the Penguins 16-8. Five minutes into the 3rd period, with the Senators on the power play, Bobby Ryan finds Mika Zibanejad down low for his 14th goal of the season to trail 3-1. Five minutes later the Senators pull to within one as Mike Hoffman fires the quick release for his 18th goal of the season. Penguins regain their 2 goal lead as Crosby scores his 2nd goal of the game for a 4-2 lead.
The Senators stun the Penguins scoring 2 goals courtesy of Mark Stone and Kyle Turris, in the span of 13 seconds to tie the game and send it into overtime.
There would be no scoring in the overtime so it was forced into a shootout. David Perron would be the only goal scorer in the shootout as the Penguins win 5-4.
The Senators next host Edmonton Saturday.
