It will likely be days before the Rideau Canal opens to skaters. Crews were on the canal at the Pretoria Bridge Thursday, drilling holes in the ice to measure its thickness.

The National Capital Commission warned people to stay off the skateway on Wednesday because the ice is still too thin for skating.

Ice must be at least 30 centimetres thick before skaters are allowed on the Rideau Canal. Last year, the canal opened for skating on January 15.

This year will mark the 41st skating season on the world's largest skating rink.
