Kingston police are investigating the death of a first-year university student whose body was discovered Monday morning at Queen's University.

Police say the body of an 18-year-old student was found on the lawn outside the co-ed Victoria Hall Residence Monday morning.

Kingston's major crime unit says it's too early to determine if the student's death is suspicious. The student's name and sex have not been released.

Flags at the university were lowered to half-mast Monday and the school is making counselling available to staff and students who want it.

"This is a shock for all of us and our hearts and thoughts are with the student's family and friends," said John Pierce, the university's associate vice principal and dean of student affairs.

Students in need of counselling are encouraged to contact the university's health, counselling and disability services department at 613-533-6000, ext. 78264 or visit the LaSalle Building at 146 Stuart St. After hours, campus security can be reached at 613-533-6080.
