Pembroke dentist Christy Natsis has been sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death in the 2011 crash that claimed the life of Bryan Casey.
After the sentence, Natsis cried as she said goodbye to friends who were in court to support her and took off the earrings she was wearing before handing them to her husband.
Outside of court, Casey’s widow LeeEllen Carroll said “I pray sense is made of the sentence and hope it serves to prevent tragedies like this from shattering the lives of others."
Adding they “wish no further harm to the offender.”
Casey’s father, William “Gus” Casey said “Our family has been through a difficult time. However, we remain strong in spirit and it is now time to put the trial behind us and start looking forward.”
Natsis was also given a four year driving ban and will be required to give a DNA sample.
Casey, a father of three, was killed when the SUV Natsis was driving slammed head-on into his truck on Highway 17 in March 2011.
While delivering the verdict in May, Justice Neil Kozloff said he found Natsis was impaired when she hit a parked vehicle in a Kanata parking lot and minutes later when she crashed into Casey’s SUV.
Defence lawyer Michael Edelson said “no comment” when asked if the defence would appeal.
