TORONTO - The Liquor Control Board of Ontario has devised a novel way of addressing the problem of drinking and driving during the holidays.
It has set up a website -- deflatetheelephant.com-- that features an interactive simulation where visitors adopt the role of party host.
Clicking through the simulation presents several options a host could employ to prevent a guest from driving home drunk.
The campaign -- called "Deflate the Elephant" -- focuses on encouraging people to speak up about the so-called "elephant in the room" that is drinking and driving.
LCBO research suggests while most people know the dangers of impaired driving it doesn't always mean they'll take action if the situation arises.
The agency says other research suggests most people who drink and drive do so after being out with friends and family -- the targets of this year's campaign.
The official launch of the campaign is next Wednesday in Toronto.
