A torched church's insurance company is suing the city of Gatineau over an arson that destroyed St-Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Aylmer in June.

On Friday, the insurance company filed a $3.8 mllion lawsuit that claims the president of the firefighters union said the water pressure in the hydrant on the night of the fire was insufficient.

Police are still looking for a suspect in the fire, which gutted the building. A person arrested in November was later released when police said there was insufficient evidence to charge him.

In the days after the fire broke out, police found signs that the church was broken into. They also found a red gas can nearby the church, and obtained witness statements that led them to believe it was a criminal act.

Community centrepiece

The Catholic church was a centrepiece for the francophone community, and parishoners were already raising money to renovate parts of it before the fire broke out.

On its website, the parishoners issued a statement saying they appreciate the support they have received since the blaze broke out.

"We have the difficult task of determining the best options possible for the community, which has been served by this parish and their church since 1840," the statement read in French.

The church also sustained a fire in 1904, and was rebuilt shortly afterwards.
