Gatineau police released a man they arrested yesterday in connection with a suspicious fire that destroyed a historic church in Aylmer more than five months ago.

Police say they released the man because they didn't have enough evidence to charge him.

The man, who is in his 50s, was arrested on Wednesday following a police search of a home.

Police have not yet laid charges in relation to the fire which gutted St-Paul's Roman Catholic Church in June.

Investigators found evidence that the church was broken into prior to the blaze. Police also located a gas can near the scene.
