A former mayoral candidate who ran for office while still in university, is putting his name on the ballot to win a seat on city council.

Ike Awgu hopes to represent Bay Ward in west Ottawa. The seat is currently held by Coun. Alex Cullen, who has already declared his candidacy for mayor in the 2010 election.

Awgu, who is a lawyer and vice-president of a local property and real estate development company, earned more than 5,000 votes in the 2003 municipal election. He was 19 years old at the time.

The election is scheduled for Oct. 25.
