The family of the alleged shooter in an incident that left a popular Mississippi Mills councillor dead and his daughter injured released a statement Saturday night saying they are in disbelief and that Travis Porteous “adored his children” and will be missed by many.

The statement said Porteous was a plumber “but the financial pressures were real and all he wanted in life was for his family to be together.”

On Thursday, Almonte Councillor Bernard Cameron was shot dead in his home on Strathburn Street.

The incident also injured his daughter Sarah Cameron, who is now in stable condition in hospital.

Porteous died of what is believed to be self-inflicted injuries in hospital Thursday night. Police had said they were not looking for any suspects in relation to this investigation.

The statement went on to say “Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Cameron family. And our thoughts and prayers are with Sarah as she begins the healing process.”

Friends and neighbours had said Porteous and Sarah Cameron had been separated for a few months and had been having issues.
