Pratt, 53, was Nepean-Carleton MP for seven years before being defeated in 2004 as the sitting minister of national defence.
He chaired the standing committee on national defence and veterans affairs for two years before entering Paul Martin's cabinet in December 2003.
Most recently, Pratt was a special advisor to the Canadian Red Cross on humanitarian issues and government relations. He was appointed the Liberal candidate in Ottawa West-Nepean just before the election writ dropped.
Pratt was active in local politics before entering Parliament. He served three terms each on the Nepean and Ottawa-Carleton Regional councils, and was a board member for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
He and wife Joan have lived in Nepean for over 25 years.
