The City of Gatineau's 2012 budget comes in at almost half a billion dollars and will see property taxes go up an average of $40 next year.

The city held its increase to 2.2 per cent, below the regional inflation rate of 2.7 per cent.

Highlights include almost $26 million for road repairs, nearly $4 in new transit spending, $4.2 million to build 175 new social housing units and $385,000 for the Gatineau airport.

The budget's news release said Gatineau residents' use of composting and recycling lowered the load on landfills, meaning they could reduce those levies by $15.10.

Gatineau Mayor Marc Bureau said municipal programs and services will under go an "efficiency review" this year.
