Several Ottawa city councillors are pushing to accelerate the return of OC Transpo service now that a public transit strike in the capital is over.

"I think we'll see more people driving unless we can improve the service to the drivers in the short term," said Coun. Steve Desroches.

The O-Train is currently the only part of the transit system that has resumed service. Although the first buses will hit the road on Saturday, most of the main routes in the inner city will start picking up commuters on Monday.

Some express routes, however, won't return to the suburbs and rural areas until April.

"I want to hear from OC Transpo that we are doing everything possible as far as getting as many mechanics as we can working around the clock to get the buses up and running," said Desroches.

"I think we need to hear that we're going to put the express bus services on a fast track so that we can get people from the suburbs to the downtown or wherever they're going as soon as possible."

The delay in express bus service is also causing concern among a number of councillors about overcrowded Park n' Rides, which are expected to be packed until all the buses are back on the road.
