Copeland Park residents want major changes to the proposed commercial development at the nearby site of the former Laurentian High School before the City of Ottawa approves the west-end project.

A 2007 neighbourhood survey found the main concern was additional traffic being generated by a "smart centre" at the corner of Baseline Road and Clyde Avenue, according to the Copeland Community Association, which made a presentation Tuesday to a city committee.

Smart Centres wants to build at least one big box store on the former school site.

There's also a prediction the Lincoln Fields Shopping Centre five kilometres away could go out of business if such a development proceeds.

The committee approved the plan, though city council itself must vote on the proposal.
