A police standoff virtually shut down a downtown neighborhood for several hours Tuesday evening.

Police were called to an address on Maclaren near Bank after reports of a man armed with a knife.  The man was described by witnesses as "confrontational" and "agitated".

Several streets were cordonned off as the tactical unit arrived on site and police negotiated with the man. That perimeter was expanded a couple of hours later.

Around ten o'clock, Tuesday evening, 6 hours after the standoff began, an arrest was made.  Police issued a statement shortly after, thanking residents for their patience.
