Daniel Alfredsson shocked many Ottawa hockey fans today with his decision to sign a one year deal with the Detroit Red Wings.

The 40- year-old veteran will earn $5.5 million  plus bonuses.

Alfredsson was courted by a number of NHL teams on the free agency market.

Detroit is seen as a perfect fit because its considered a Stanley Cup contender.

Alfredsson also becomes the 8th Swede on the Red Wings roster.

The native of Gotherburg, Sweden has spent his entire career in the nation's capital, scoring 426 goals and adding 682 assists in 1,178 games.

In Ottawa, he's considered an iconic sports figure, perhaps the most respected athlete in the city's history.

Among the many charities he supported,  Alfreddson also played a major role in helping to help remove the stigma of mental illness with the community "Do you know who I am campaign".
