Kingston police say a power outage that affected "a widespread area" was the result of someone getting into a local Hydro One transmission station.

In a statement, police said an individual accessed the transmission station near Division Street and John Counter Boulevard Wednesday afternoon.

"There were significant concerns for this individual's safety and out of an abundance of caution hydro was shut down to a widespread area very briefly until all safety concerns were addressed and the individual was successfully removed from the compound by police," Kingston police said in a news release.

Police said there was no risk to public safety as a result of the incident. Hydro One and Utilities Kingston restored power as soon as possible.

The individual was not charged.
